It appears the Easy Transfer program included in Windows Vista through Windows 8 has been removed from Windows 8.1 and later. I was in the process of replacing a Vista computer with an 8.1 one. I installed the Vista update that makes the Easy Transfer program compatible with Windows 7/8, then exported all my data and settings confidently to an external drive. Then I tried opening the transfer file on the 8.1 new computer – a process I've done for family and friends without a problem on many Win7 and Win8 computers.
After examining the transfer file for several seconds, Win8.1 displayed a message saying that transfer from Windows Vista is not supported. A quick search on the 'net showed me this was a deliberate decision.
I hope that whoever made that stupid decision dies a painful death. I also hope someone with enough sense will reverse that decision in an upcoming update to Windows 8.1. Frankly, I can't understand why Microsoft should make it difficult to migrate from an older Windows version to the latest one. It seems totally counterproductive especially as, up to the previous increment, the ability to do it painlessly was there. I'm sure corporations will think twice about upgrading if they can't be sure to do an easy migration, and it will be that much revenue that Microsoft won't receive. And, I'm not ready to spend 24 € (that's almost $32!) for a one-shot operation when I can do the work (more painfully, but almost as efficiently) manually – with a little assistance from some free utilities, even supposing that the Laplink program would be adequate for my need. I just bought a laptop with Windows 8.1 installed. I am trying to use a Belkin Easy Transfer cable to copy files from my old laptop running Windows 7.
I access the Windows Easy Transfer on the old laptop and get good questions and options. I then access Windows Easy Transfer on 8.1 and it says if you download/backup your files to another hard drive or a flash drive insert this now. If you click no, then it shuts off.
I have the cable installed but it does not seem to recognize it. Did MS change the Windows Easy Transfer?
